On Thyme Hills
3eib / Azkadinya
‘On Thyme Hills’ was a multi-disciplinary exhibition organised by Azkadinya, Alia Hamaoui and 3eib that explored resistant ecologies across different locations, including London, Lebanon and Palestine. Taking the phrase ‘resistant ecologies’ from Munira Khayyat’s book “A landscape of war”, the event highlighted food and land-based practices that vitalise more-than-human relations to persist and make life amidst returning seasons of devastations, be it challenges of war, occupation and late stage capitalism.
Here, Maia shared the third edition of Meditations on Red- an iterative edible project that explores the emotive properties of red in all its rage, love and heart opening abilities. This edition brought medicine (the edible and poetic kind) for collective heartache and heartbreak in the form of a herbal tonic (scotch bonnet with foraged hawthorne & rosehips // fermented + foraged rosehip + pomegranate cheong) that activated the physical and emotional heart.
These berries are known to support us during moments of grief, loss and depressive states, while also lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. Tarralini biscuits infused with the same foraged berries were dipped in olive oil from Jerusalem. This offering fused lands, hands & hearts in the journey through our guts- a small alchemical gesture to remind us of our deeply interwoven nature.
All proceeds from the exhibition went towards a community kitchen sustaining people that had been recently displaced in Beirut. Maia also contributed to a short film under the same name, “On Thyme Hills”, a collection of raw footage from land-based practitioners between London, Lebanon and Palestine.
